School of Chinese and Literature traces its origins back to the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at Pingyuan Normal College, which was established in August 1951. In August 1955, the department was transferred to Henan First Normal College (now Henan University). The Chinese Department was re-established in September 1985, and was later established as School of Chinese and Literature

in April 2003.

Currently, the School offers four undergraduate majors: Chinese Language and Literature, Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL), Broadcasting and Television Studies, and Drama and Film Studies. Among these, Chinese Language and Literature, International Chinese Language Education, and Broadcasting and Television Studies are recognized as National First-class Undergraduate Major Construction Points , while Drama and Film Studies is a provincial First-class Undergraduate Major Construction Point. The School hosts a Postdoctoral Research Mobile Station in Chinese Language and Literature, a doctoral degree authorization site in first-level discipline Chinese Language and Literature, and masters degree authorization sites in first-level disciplines of Chinese Language and Literature and Drama and Film Studies. Additionally, there are professional Masters degree authorization sites in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL), Discipline Education (Chinese), and Journalism and Communication. Chinese Language and Literature is designated as a provincial-level primary key discipline.

The School is equipped with several teaching facilities including the Talents Training Base for the Promotion of Chinese Language in Henan Province, the Provincial Base for University Students Intangible Cultural Heritage Inheritance, and the Provincial Demonstration Center for Experimental Teaching in Broadcasting and Television News. It also houses eight research bases, such as the Provincial Center for Philosophy and Social Sciences Management Innovation and Consultation, the Central China Literature and Culture Research Center, the Central China Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection and Research Base, and the Chinese Excellent Traditional Culture Inheritance Base (Huai Bang). There are two provincial-level teaching teams and three Henan Provincial Higher Education Philosophy and Social Sciences Innovation Teams. The School also hosts the China Reading Theory Research Association, the China Literary Criticism Association, and the Henan Provincial Chinese Language Education Research Association.

The School currently has 103 faculty and staff members, including 46 professors and associate professors, 77 doctors, 19 doctoral supervisors, and 40 masters supervisors. The School has been awarded three national first-class courses, one national excellent online open course, three national excellent video open courses, and two national planned textbooks. Additionally, there are more than thirty provincial excellent courses, and over thirty provincial teaching reform projects and teaching achievement awards. Over the past five years, the faculty have secured nearly 30 projects funded by National Social Science Foundation, over 50 provincial and ministerial-level research projects, with research funding exceeding 8 million yuan. They have published over 300 academic papers, including more than 140 CSSCI papers, nearly 40 academic monographs, and received nearly 20 provincial and ministerial-level awards.
